It’s About Balance – Christian Fuselier ’26
Christian Fuselier, from Lafayette, Louisiana, has established a reputation for his academic achievements and leadership positions at UNC Charlotte. Now a junior majoring in marketing and minoring in French, he is president of the Mu Tau chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and a lead intern for Charlotte Athletics. Balancing leadership responsibilities with a 4.0 GPA, Fuselier continues to thrive in and out of the classroom.
Can you share a bit about your journey from Lafayette to UNC Charlotte? What attracted you to the University?
I am attending UNC Charlotte because I was fortunate enough to receive the prestigious Levine Scholarship, which covers all of my school expenses. I never expected to be in North Carolina for college, but I have enjoyed immersing myself in the state’s culture. Charlotte offers a lot of opportunities for business, internships, fun, and it has always been my goal to attend an out-of-state school. Being able to achieve that goal has been an accomplishment in itself.
You’re involved in many leadership roles, including serving as president of the Mu Tau chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. How do you balance your academic responsibilities with your leadership commitments?
Balancing my academic responsibilities with my leadership commitments is possible thanks to having a strong support system. Delegating tasks and relying on my brothers, friends and family for help when needed has allowed me to manage my responsibilities effectively and reduce stress. Without their support, I wouldn’t be able to operate as efficiently as I do.
What has your experience been like working as a lead intern for Charlotte Athletics?
I have gained valuable insights into the extensive behind-the-scenes work necessary for the smooth execution of a sporting event. I coordinated major sports events including soccer, baseball, basketball and football. My responsibilities included managing the video boards, controlling the music and organizing in-game activities, like the student field goal challenge and the Harris Teeter relay race. Additionally, I assisted VIP guests during games. This experience made me appreciate the significant, often underappreciated work done by departments like marketing in the sports industry.
What’s been your proudest achievement so far at UNC Charlotte?
My proudest achievement has been my participation in the 2023 Man of Distinction Pageant, hosted by the Iota Rho chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. I had never done anything like a pageant, and I would even consider myself a reserved individual. It was completely out of my comfort zone. I ended up placing second, which was a huge surprise. Even though I didn’t win, I gained a lot of self-confidence and was able to showcase my talents to the campus.
As president of Mu Tau, how has leading Alpha Phi Alpha impacted you?
Leading in this position has taught me the importance of patience and understanding. Not having a singular leadership style has helped because everyone is unique and responds differently to various situations. Being proactive and completing tasks early has been a big focus of mine and it’s something I plan to continue doing after my term. Being president has also encouraged me to collaborate with other organizations and clubs to increase the impact of our mission.
What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day of classes and responsibilities?
My favorite way to unwind after a long day is to bake or cook something. I think of the kitchen as my blank canvas, and the food I create as my creative outlet. I have a passion for cooking, and I love the process of creating something amazing from nothing.
What’s your go-to hype song before a big presentation or event?
My go-to hype song is “EA” by Young Nudy. I love the build-up in the beginning and how the energy carries throughout the entire song. I feel ready to tackle any challenge after listening to it.
Do you have a favorite spot on campus to relax or get inspired?
My favorite spot on campus to relax or get inspired is by Hechenbleikner Lake. There’s a bench off the gravel path right next to the water, and it’s very beautiful and serene, especially when the flowers around the lake start to bloom. I love to go there, sit, listen to music or chat with friends.
