Summer Three: Pre-Professional Experience
In the third summer experience, Levine Scholars participate in a career-related or leadership internship designed to complement their programs of study and prepare them for post-undergraduate aspirations in their selected fields.
Five Pathways for Career Development
During the third summer, Levine Scholars engage in a career-focused or leadership development experience designed to complement their programs of study and prepare them for life after graduation. Because students’ goals are diverse, these experiences are flexible and individualized. With the guidance of the program, each scholar designs their own professional development experience by selecting from five distinct pathways:
- Pre-Professional Internship
- A professional work experience that extends classroom learning. Internships may be arranged through established programs or tailored between a student and employer, typically paid and flexible in hours. Depending on their program of study, scholars may also earn academic credit.
- Advanced Research
- An in-depth research experience with a faculty mentor or research team that helps scholars build advanced research skills and professional networks. For example, acceptance to a NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates can provide such opportunities.
- Creative and Professional Fellowships
- Fellowships provide scholars opportunities to build targeted skills and prepare for future careers or graduate study. Examples include residency-based art fellowships or professional fellowships focused on a specific field or graduate school preparation.
- Study Abroad and Internship Combination
- Scholars complete at least one long-term professional experience and a study abroad experience, with the option to combine them through an internship abroad. The Office of Education Abroad (OEA) provides resources, and all international experiences are planning in coordination with OEA and the Levine Scholars Program.
- Co-Op (Cooperative Education Program)
- A co-op is a full-time, paid position within a company or organization that typically spans multiple semesters. Co-ops provide more training and responsibility than internships, and most include academic credit. These experiences are only available to students is specific majors such as engineering, business, computer science and architecture.
