Alecia Washington is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Public Health. She was a dual-enrolled student at her high school and local community college, where she graduated with her Associate’s Degree in Arts. In high school, she served as the student body vice president, where her goal was to be the voice of the students and create a safe environment where they could express their feelings and ideas in safe spaces. She was a 2022 Bank of America Student Leader, where she was allowed to see how nonprofits, governments, and businesses collaborate to meet local needs by participating in the National Student Leaders Summit. Through the Bank of America Student Leaders Program, she served her community through a paid eight-week internship with the Project Impact nonprofit. She worked on the Reading Warriors initiative, which helped increase literacy competencies. She became a Youth Grantmaker In Action, where twenty other selected students in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System provided several grants to youth-led organizations that positively impact and address community issues and challenges in Forsyth County. This program gave Alecia leadership experience, consensus-building, and decision-making skills. During the third quarter of the 2021-22 school year, Alecia volunteered with third graders at her elementary school, The Downtown School. She developed various math and literacy games and mnemonics to help the students remember the curriculum they were learning. She also created songs and used different beats to retell stories they read to assist them with their reading comprehension. Alecia was a part of the College LAUNCH for Leadership Program, a college prep, social justice, and leadership development program. She participated in discussions on social injustices within the local and global communities. She was on a team that presented racial and ethnic disparity in state prisons to a panel of community leaders. Over the next four years, she would like to continue to serve and give back to her community through volunteerism. She has joined the Association of Nursing Students and the Black Organization Alliance Board at UNC Charlotte.
