Rokia Sissoko is a geology and chemistry double major, with research focuses on water quality and geochemistry. The Haw River’s ongoing contamination issues in her hometown of Pittsboro, North Carolina sparked her passion for environmental conservation. Rokia serves as the Lead Designer for ETHEL, UNC Charlotte’s undergraduate research journal, a Niner Guide, and a member of SGE (Earth Science Honor Society). She completed a nonprofit internship with the Catawba Lands Conservancy & Carolina Thread Trail and studied abroad in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Rokia regularly volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, The Bulb and the Catawba Riverkeeper. After graduation, Rokia plans to pursue a doctorate in geoscience.
