My Journey at the Future Accounting Leaders Summit

Categories:

This fall, I had the opportunity to attend the Future Accounting Leaders Summit sponsored by Deloitte, an experience that ultimately helped me clarify my academic and career goals. The summit took place just outside of Dallas, Texas, and UNC Charlotte sent 24 students to participate. I was selected after receiving an email from my professor, who nominated students based on their performance in our first accounting course. Once I expressed interest, Deloitte and my professor continued the selection process, and soon after I received my invitation.

The purpose of the summit was to introduce students to the career paths available in accounting, connect us with professionals in the field, and offer practical advice for navigating the early stages of our journey. Most participants were sophomores, though a few freshmen and juniors also attended. In total, there were around 600 students representing about 20 universities from all across the country, including schools from California, New Jersey, and everywhere in between.

The summit lasted about a day and a half, but it was packed with activity. We arrived midday on Friday and met the other attendees over lunch. The program officially began with a panel of professional accountants who shared their career stories and insights. That evening, we had dinner followed by a social event, a casino-night themed gathering, and even optional karaoke at a nearby venue. It was a great way to unwind and meet students from other schools.

Saturday continued with full programming from morning to evening. After breakfast, we heard from another industry professional, followed by several interactive activities, including a Shark Tank–style simulation and additional accounting-related challenges. These sessions were not only fun but also gave us a taste of how problem-solving plays a role in the profession.

One of the highlights of the day was a fireside chat with Rashawn Williams, a CEO and entrepreneur who has also appeared on Shark Tank. Hearing about his work, his businesses, and his approach to leadership was incredibly inspiring. Later in the afternoon, we participated in a community service event where we helped build bikes that were donated to local students who had excelled in school. I loved that the summit incorporated both professional development and meaningful service.

The evening wrapped up with more opportunities to connect—another dinner, additional sessions on interviewing and networking skills, and time to ask professionals questions about résumés, internships, and career planning. On Sunday, we concluded with a final gathering and lunch before heading home.

Looking back, the summit had a major impact on me. Before attending, I was torn between several majors. I originally planned to pursue finance and international business, but I found myself increasingly drawn to accounting, especially after enjoying my introductory class. Spending the weekend surrounded by professionals who genuinely love what they do—and hearing their stories—gave me the clarity I needed. By the end of the summit, I felt confident in my decision to pursue both finance and accounting.

If I could offer one piece of advice to new students or anyone exploring business majors, it would be this: go to office hours. Building that connection with my professor is ultimately what opened the door to this opportunity. Having someone who sees your potential and encourages you, even before you fully see it in yourself, can make a huge difference. Office hours are not just about getting help with class material; they’re also about forming relationships that support your academic and professional growth.
Attending the Future Accounting Leaders Summit was an unforgettable experience that helped shape the path I’m on today. I’m grateful for the encouragement I received, the connections I made, and the confidence I gained in choosing a career in accounting.
